What is Nuclear Cardiology?
Nuclear Cardiology is used to study myocardial blood flow along with evaluating how efficiently the heart is pumping. It also produces an image of the damage and location of a heart attack which can help to customize treatment and prevention options.
One of the most widely used techniques in nuclear cardiology is perfusion imaging for myocardial blood flow. Perfusion is the flow of blood or other fluid through your heart and perfusion imaging can show where the flow may have stopped or been slowed in the heart.
This is considered a form of stress test which tests heart function and can be combined with one or more other test types. With a nuclear stress test, a dye with radioactive properties is used in the heart to show function while you are at rest and when you are in motion. This often involves running on a treadmill to show the heart during moderate to intense exertion.
When is Nuclear Cardiology Needed?
Nuclear Cardiology is one of the best tools for assessing heart health. There are several reasons these tests could be required, including to test for and assess coronary artery disease, more commonly referred to as heart disease.
It can also be used for cardiac ischemia which is a compromised flow of blood and oxygen in the heart. While a temporary narrowing of the blood vessels may not cause problems immediately if the blockage continues or gets worse, a heart attack can occur. With the imaging that a nuclear cardiologist provides, this can be assessed early to see what intervention methods are required before more serious damage can occur.
