Difference between X-ray and Ultrasound Clinic Downtown Toronto

X-rays and ultrasounds are both used to produce images of the internal organs but differ in how they are administered and what they can do.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds are produced by sound waves and create a real time view of the internal organs and will play like a video. When people think of ultrasounds, the most common reference is for fetus imaging, however; this sound wave technology can be used on most soft tissue including the heart, pancreas, muscles, and tendons amongst others.

X-rays

X-rays are a cost-effective and useful form of imaging that started at the end of the 1800s. Over the years, this technology has advanced and there is now very little risk associated with the radiation used. This type of imaging is best used for hard structures such as bones and teeth along with lungs, ears, nasal passage, and throat.

Used Together

These imaging types can also be used together to get a more complete picture of an area of the body. Dense areas of tissue can often benefit from both types of imaging.

In short, yes. Typically, the amount of radiation you are exposed to during an x-ray is the equivalent of what you would naturally be exposed to over the course of a few days or up to a few years. While there may be some increased risk of cancer due to this, x-rays often help to detect problems early and more accurately which offsets the small increase of risk.
